Grigory Musatov

This late work is typical of Musatov's style. A luminous, impressionistic view of the Czech landscape, we can sense the warmth rising from the fields of heather, punctuated by cottages with their jaunty red-tiled roofs. This was one of 34 works by Musatov exhibited at Prague's Art Symposium (umělecká beseda) of 1937. Perhaps it was this painting in particular of which the critic Frank Tetauer wrote in the catalogue: 'The air ripples with bluish smoke, the atmosphere shimmers, nature itself vibrates'.
