Kytice II

Martin Salajka

The graphic artist Martin Salajka was born in Moravia in 1981. This lithograph in the collection is typical of his work. As befits an artist who takes so much inspiration from the natural world, its palette is lively and multicoloured. But the subject matter dwells on emblems of death, echoing the renaissance trope of 'Vanitas' or the futility of life. The juxtaposition of the bouquet of flowers (kytice) with an animal skull is a typical motif in the artist's work.
